Below...you'll find each county in the state Kansas,and it's heritage societies.Some counties have multiple,and some counties are yet to create one.As a tip to you doing some research,it really pays off to write a particular one when researching a particular area.Not all us old folks like to use the computer..hahaha..:)

When it comes to the state of Alabama's heritage,and history..You'll definitely find us an interesting state as far as both directions go.Interesting in every aspect that is.

           Brief History Of Alabama

Alabama, which joined the union as the 22nd state in 1819.We're known as the "Heart of Dixie."

The state of Alabama was occupied by American Indians as early as some 10,000 years ago.

Later on the Europeans reached the area in the 16th century,but it's believed the first Europeans to reach the area were Spanish explorers who sailed into what is now Mobile Bay around 1519.

I think some of us older folks remember in high school history the name Hernando de Soto.The Spanish were searching the area looking for gold in the 1540's and Hernando was one of those explorers who came through this area.

At that time, the main American Indian groups in the region were the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Creek.

With the end of the American Revolutionary War which was fought between the years 1775-1783, the British lost their control of the American colonies,and most of present day Alabama became part of a new nation after the war,except for the Mobile area which had come under Spanish control,but in 1813 that changed,and on December 14, 1819,Alabama became the 22nd state to join the Union.

By the 1830s,almost all of the Native American tribes in the territory were forced to move west.

During the first half of the 19th century cotton was king,and slave labor that went along with it was the blood to Alabama's economy.

Not long after with issues over slavery,and other state issues.Alabama was the fourth southern state to secede from the Union,just weeks before the civil war took place.

At this very time Montgomery Alabama was the capital of the Confederate States,but less than a year later was relocated to Richmond Virginia.

The first Union Soldiers rode in to Alabama in 1862,and the battles that pursued were some of the greatest civil war battles to take place.Such as First Bull Run,Antietam and Gettysburg.

One of the last Civil War battles was fought at Fort Blakely on Mobile Bay.A force of 16,000 Union soldiers,with many who were were African American, moved on the fort on April 2, 1865, taking it in seven days.

Some 4,475 men died in this battle on one day alone,and an estimated 2,900 Confederate soldiers lost their lives.

Not long once again after the civil war,Alabama,and some of the other former Confederate states entered the era of Reconstruction.1865-1877 wS a period of which the Southern states were reorganized.In 1868 Alabama was readmitted to the Union.

The deep south after the reconstruction was put into act,instituted laws and customs known as Jim Crow laws.The creation of segregated blacks and whites was put into effect with state laws passed.

With the oppression of African Americans,famous activists & hero's emereged.Among them the educator Booker T. Washington is a great example as one of the first.Born into slavery,and went on to become the first leader of the Tuskegee Institute,that later was renamed Tuskegee in Tuskegee Alabama.The Tuskegee Institute trained black teachers,and offered instruction in other occupational skills helping in employment,and educating.

Stress was still in the south,and Alabama was at the center of such historical events as the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

In December 1955 Rosa Parks,a black seamstress who was active in the Montgomery chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People,famously refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger.

A bus boycott from the African Americans is regarded as the first large-scale demonstration challenging segregation in the U.S.A young pastor named Martin Luther King Junior emerged from the action as a national civil rights leader,while also solidifying his commitment to nonviolent resistance.A year later in 1956,the U.S. Supreme Court ordered Montgomery to integrate its bus system.

We've come along ways here in Alabama,and we proudly share the history & heritage,and the historical events that have taken place,as a learning tool for others.

To not include history as a whole,is dishonest history,and our goal is we all learn from our history.The good,and the not so good.After all,what would history be with dishonesty,than a work of fiction.It's the facts the researcher dwells on,not on the hope & belief of what should have been.

We'll be adding some of the historical locations Alabama has to offer,along with a brief description of the sites at hand.We'll try to start out with the most popular,but we'll also throw in some of the most interesting,with locations that not only throw in the history,but some heritage as well.
